"Don't follow trends and write from the heart." - Dennis Palumbo
Tell us a bit biographical journey of yours ? How did you became an author ?
"I always wanted to write, particularly novels, but after a short time working in advertising, I made the trek across the USA to Hollywood to try my hand at film and TV. I was lucky enough to work as a writer in the entertainment industry (my writing credits include the film MY FAVORITE YEAR and the TV series WELCOME BACK, KOTTER). Once I retired from show business to train as a psychologist, I started writing prose again. Now I love my twin careers as a therapist and mystery writer.
What does your Book Subject deals in ? Please give an introduction about your book ?
"My novel, PHANTOM LIMB, is the fourth in a series of mystery thrillers featuring psychologist Daniel Rinaldi, a trauma expert who consults with the Pittsburgh Police. Rinaldi's specialty is treating the victims of violent crime...people who may have survived the armed robbery, rape or home invasion, but still live with the psychological after-effects. These include Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms like anxiety, depression, guilt, and fears of another violent event occurring. In PHANTOM LIMB, Dr. Rinaldi meets a patient who says she plans to commit suicide that very evening, unless he can talk her out of it. Though he manages to do so, the poor woman is kidnapped soon after leaving his office. Through an unlikely series of events, Rinaldi gets involved in the race to get her back safely from her kidnappers."
What was inspiration behind the characters that you wrote in the book ? Any real life people that have shades in them ?
"My own 26-year-career as a licensed psychotherapist is part of my inspiration for my lead character, Daniel Rinaldi. Also, like Rinaldi, I'm an Italian-American, born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. Unlike me, however, Rinaldi is a former amateur boxer."
How fascinating was the journey of writing this book ?
"Pretty interesting, since I did a lot of research about the condition known as Phantom Limb. It's a syndrome in which a person who's lost a limb to an accident, surgery or some violent act has the sensation that the missing limb is still there. It itches, or feels the cold and the heat.
Is the Plot of book somewhere inspired from any incident or things around ?
"In the beginning of the book, Dr. Rinaldi meets a former Hollywood sex symbol and PLAYBOY Playmate who came back to her small Pennsylvania hometown after her acting career ended. Since I was a Hollywood screenwriter for 20 years before retiring and becoming a psychologist, I have a great deal of insight about people in the entertainment industry.
So it was fun writing about this troubled woman. I really felt I understood her struggles."
Your Writing process involves any research work in media or is it totally based on imagination and experiences from life ?
"As I said above, mostly some research and life experiences, especially in my work as a therapist in private practice and at a psychiatric hospital. The rest is my imagination!"
How different are you from your characters in the Books and stories you write ?
"I'm similar in some ways, but different in others. As I mentioned, my hero is a former boxer, which I'm definitely not. Rinaldi is also a lot braver and more resourceful than I am!"
Was this book originally planned or did it came to your mind while working on another project of yours ?
"It was originally planned in that it's the fourth novel in the Daniel Rinaldi series. When I'm not working on a novel, I write a column called "Hollywood on the Couch" for the PSYCHOLOGY TODAY website. I also write for the Huffington Post."
Anything that you would like to tell us about yourself or your book that we missed ?
"I don't think so. Other than that I'm thrilled with the response I've gotten from readers about my Daniel Rinaldi books. And I invite any new readers to feel free to get in touch and let me know what they think of the books. I can be contacted through my website, www.dennispalumbo.com
Any advice for new writers ?
"Don't follow trends and write from the heart. Keep giving them YOU, until YOU is what they want!"
Will you dabble in other writing styles and what would it be ?
"I write short stories, which have appeared in ELLERY QUEEN'S MYSTERY MAGAZINE and THE STRAND MAGAZINE, and are collected in a book called FROM CRIME TO CRIME (Tallfellow Press).
Where can readers Buy your Books ?
"My books are available as hardcovers, trade paperback, audio and e-book, from amazon or barnes and noble online. They can also be purchased from the publisher, Poisoned Pen Press, or by ordering them from your favorite book store.
